JAZZ CO/OP - JAZZ CO/OP
Originally sprawled over a double long player, Jazz CO/OP was the album name given to the Sydney unit of the same name. Consisting of Roger Frampton (Piano), Jack Thorncraft (Bass) and Phil Treloar (Drums), the three were noted as the city's finest players from the Avant-Garde Jazz Scene. This tight combination was rounded off with American Sax player, Howie Smith who was stationed in town while lecturing at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Pronounced with no leader as such, the unit represents a musical Co-operative with each member valued as equal contributors. The Jazz here is intense as it is varied, ranging from John Cage-inspired philosophy to Coltrane-influenced free exploration. Stand out cuts are the morose beauty of 'A-la Coltrane' and the petulant bass heavy funk of 'Pyramid Piece' (comped on 1995's 'Heading in the Right Direction').
